The Miracle of Life

I heard a testimony recently of a mother whose child confessed to her “I want to meet my little sister, she keeps telling me she is coming!” She had no idea she was pregnant. It got me thinking. I realized when people sometimes say, “Oh the fetus isn’t capable of complex thought” or “It’s just a clump of cells at that point” they may not appreciate that the moment of conception is Special and Important. When Jesus came to this world in His incarnation, we may then better realize, His Presence on earth as a human or His “essence or soul or spirit” entered into Mary at this Moment. This story helped me realize that child has a soul that is eternal and is very capable of thought before coming to this world and entering into her developing body at the special moment of conception.

We must grapple with this reality when considering abortion. It is a human being that is discarded when making the decision to “abort” a child. We take such a decision very seriously when that human being is not in the womb and we have serious consequences for the act of murder. But somehow, we see things differently when that child is forming in the womb- they are not yet a person, unless of course, they are wanted- as it is indeed murder to kill a pregnant mother or cause the death of her child while it is in the womb. Slipping her an abortion drug or abusing her to cause miscarriage come with murder charges. But if, for whatever reason, the mother decides she doesn’t want her baby or if she gives into the pressure of others around her, it is even counted as “healthcare.”

The Bible gives us profound insights and warnings to help us understand this sacred and holy reality. There are two scriptures I want to share. One is Psalm 139, written by King David. This Psalm describes in detail the omniscience and sovereignty of God. It also speaks of God’s hand in our creation and the nature of the soul in the womb. Verse 13 and 14 state, “You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” This scripture testifies that we are indeed God’s very handiwork, intricately woven in the womb- “fearfully,” in other words, this act is to be viewed with wonder, awe, and deep reverence. Also, it is to be celebrated as one of His “wonderful” works. A child is a blessing bestowed and worthy to be celebrated in worship of Him and in gratitude.

The other scripture is very telling. It is from the prophet Jeremiah, who was reluctant when the Lord called him to his destiny as a prophet as he was young and understood that a prophet’s life is very difficult and dangerous. But God spoke to him and encouraged him that He would be with him throughout his journey. Indeed, He warned him in Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” The key term here is *Before*. God knows each child *before* even beginning to “form us” in the womb. We say life begins at conception, yet God already knows our soul and HIs plans for our life before even that point! Just like that child said his sister was telling him, “I am coming!” The bottom line is, we are all souls before we receive a God-woven body with a purpose in life. We may or may not end up fulfilling this purpose. We may or may not be “set apart” for such a high calling. But we are called to view this reality with reverence and awe.

I hope this testimony and these insights can open our eyes to the truth and help us to see this cultural battle for life and abortion more accurately. If you haven’t considered the pro-life side of this debate, please take some time to think deeply about it. Please consider our Maker’s words and warnings and the fact we are not our own, and indeed have all been bought with a price- that of our Savior Jesus Christ’s blood shed on the cross for our sins. God did not abandon us to the fate of His holy judgment in creating us. He offered us mercy and redemption by His own blood. There are no more important matters to consider in this life. I pray these thoughts might compel you to consider our wonderful Maker and His gifts to us, especially each gift that the miracle of life in a child is to us. God ble
