Children of the Covenant

What does it mean to be a child of God? Dating all the way back to Noah and Abraham, God created covenants to bind His love and promise to those whom He counts His children. He made a covenant with David which He fulfilled through Jesus, and Jesus made a covenant with us believers by His blood. In this lesson, we will learn what it means to be a child of God, bound by His covenant with us.

We will then choose a child of God whose portrait we want to see in black and white charcoal. We will learn facial proportions and value shading in this lesson. I did a portrait of my husband, Dennis Allen, a beautiful man of God I admire for many reasons. It was prayerful to meditate upon him through drawing, as your drawing also will be to you.

While we will not have time in this class, you may want to use some of the skills you learn to choose a biblical figure or scene and try out colored pastels for a fun challenge. The scene I did below was Mary sitting at Jesus feet from the gospel of Luke 10:39. I have always wanted to be like Mary in this scene, so this meditation meant a lot to me. I may try a portrait lesson like this for next year if you are interested in checking back for 2026.
